A lot of training providers will barely equip you with the absolute minimum skills to allow you to drive forward…. But what about when you find yourself reversing completely blind in between 2 other artics on a bay either side of the bay you need to get on? West Country Driver Training Instructors are all extremely well qualified with decades of driver experience on National and International roads. “We have all been there and got the T-Shirt”
Added benefit from our instructors again, is we are all qualified ADI’s (Approved Driving Instructors) who have had to pass rigorous exams to be able to coach/teach you the real skills to be able to step into any new commercial driving job without your employer needing to buddy you up with another experienced driver. Our **business partners know that when a successful candidate comes for an interview having been trained by West Country Driver Training, they are receiving the very best candidates for their advertised jobs.
What kind of training can you expect as part of the package?
Pathway A: Category B (Car Licence) to Category C LGV (Class2 Rigid Truck Licence)
Pathway B: Category B (Car Licence) to Category C+E (Class1 Articulated Truck Licence)
Our instructors will assess your capabilities as part of your introduction and induction onto either pathway programme.
Let’s discuss CPC for a minute:
Basically, CPC stands for Certificate of Professional Competence CPC was developed and introduced into the UK in 2009 for LGV/HGV drivers as a means of adding total professionalism to the Vocational Licence. You need to hold a Driver Qualification Card (CPC) if you would like to drive a lorry as the main part of your job. (Please see FAQs for other explanations) We must do 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to keep our CPC Cards current. West Country Driver Training is proud to work with Ideal Driver Training who deliver our complete CPC course.
We are looking for our next generation of Knights Of The Road so if you’re aged 18 – 67 then we are very keen to meet you.
Our dedicated instructors have already helped many women and men from all walks of life to achieve their Professional Vocational Licence and these people are now on the road delivering your Food, Electrical, Consumable, and other Essential supplies as fully qualified commercial HGV and LGV drivers.
We have 100% pass rates, proving testament to the quality of our instructors and the assessment process that helps us identify the best achievers right from the outset.

There is currently a massive shortage of qualified professional LGV/HGV drivers. Brexit, Covid and an ageing industry have led to this crisis in our logistics industry. Traditionally pay and conditions have been mediocre to say the least. The acute shortage (that led to petrol shortages and empty supermarket shelves) serves testament that the industry is in crisis. Prime Minister Johnson has pledged to make conditions much improved for our truckers, whilst logistic companies have been forced into paying decent salaries to recruit new drivers or even retain existing staff
Tramping is an expression used for drivers who live in their trucks on a Monday to Friday basis. They would normally have their own dedicated Tractor Unit, where they have their own home comforts Etc… They would normally leave their designated base on a Monday morning and tramp the width and breadth of the UK or Europe delivering and collecting loads of produce or product. Only returning to base camp at the end of their week away.
The Tractor unit is the drive unit that pulls the trailer. Typical Tractor units are Scania R450, Volvo FH460, Mercedes Actros2658 and DAF XF460
